Rural Water Supply Schemes

SSD served as a key UNICEF partner in rehabilitating rural water supply schemes throughout earthquake-affected districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The programme focused on reconstructing damaged systems, strengthening village water committees and tehsil municipal administrations, and providing tools and training that enable sustainable operation and maintenance.

Sanitation and Hygiene Education

SSD has delivered sanitation and hygiene projects backed by UNICEF, NRC, UNOCHA, CARE International, and CRS in schools and communities. These efforts supplied safe drinking water and sanitation facilities alongside comprehensive hygiene promotion in earthquake-affected districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and AJK. SSD continues to support IDP camps and flood-hit areas in the province with WASH services and rehabilitation.

In addition, SSD implemented UNICEF-supported School-Led Total Sanitation initiatives across nearly 200 villages in AJK and is extending the approach to 30 more villages.

Education

Through UNICEF’s Welcome Back to School Initiative, SSD rehabilitated 600 boys’ and girls’ schools in earthquake-affected areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and AJK. The work restored missing facilities, boosted enrolment, and built the capacity of education managers to strengthen community participation and address challenges such as teacher absenteeism.

Child Protection

SSD partnered with UNICEF to register births in more than 200 union councils and established a referral system with the AJK Ministry of Social Welfare and Women Development to tackle key protection concerns. The organization also collaborates with the ILO to raise awareness on child labour, engage communities, and support responsive government services. SSD runs rehabilitation centres in Tehsil Balakot to provide targeted care.

Livelihood

SSD and UNDP partnered on livelihood recovery in the flood-affected districts of Tank and Lower Dir. Early recovery initiatives restored income sources for more than 1,000 families through agricultural support, livestock assistance, and skills training.

Disaster Risk Reduction

Recognizing the escalating impact of climate-related and human-made hazards, SSD collaborates with the UN and other partners to design both stand-alone and integrated DRR projects across flood-prone districts. Each intervention begins with detailed risk and vulnerability assessments and spans emergency response, early recovery, prevention, mitigation, and preparedness. Notable actions include constructing protective bunds and walls, undertaking targeted afforestation, and engaging communities in preparedness campaigns.

Preparedness activities focus on establishing community-based early warning systems, forming and equipping disaster management committees, linking local structures with disaster authorities, organizing DRR co-curricular activities, staging drills, and delivering public awareness through radio, events, and community dialogues. Complementary livelihood initiatives in carpentry, electrical work, welding, plumbing, tailoring, and embroidery expand income options for high-risk households.

Capacity Building and Social Mobilization

SSD’s programme delivery pairs physical infrastructure with comprehensive social mobilization. Activities include forming and strengthening community organizations, conducting door-to-door engagement, facilitating awareness trainings, and coordinating media outreach such as radio programmes, seminars, and awareness walks.

SSD and its associates conduct diverse surveys and research assignments, including:

  • Institutional reviews and management assessments of NGOs and CBOs
  • DRR risk and vulnerability assessments
